So, I really had my reservations about reading this book. The Girl In The Spider's Web is a continuation of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo series written by Stieg Larsson. I loved the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo series (crime novels set in Sweden) but I could not wrap my mind around why an author would want to continue another author's series. Seemed like a bit of creative plagiarism.
However, upon recommendation from a friend, I decided to give this book a shot. The book's two main characters are Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist. Salander has an incredibly troubled past. She is a skinny, antisocial girl with tattoos who goes by the hacker handle of Wasp. Salander has no patience for the law and tends to take matters into her own hands. Her dark background has turned her into a bit of a crusader. Essentially, she hates men who hate women and children. Blomkvist is a renowned newspaper journalist who operates with integrity. Unfortunately, his magazine, Millennium, is facing pressure to commercialize for profit's sake. Together, Salander and Blomkvist unravel a scandal involving the NSA, a high level tech company, an artificial intelligence expert, and a sophisticated criminal organization.
The book takes a hot second to warm up but once it did...I was in it. I mean, I was really in it. I locked into the action and the intrigue. I went from bed to couch to bath tub to bed to couch to bath tub until I finally finished and checked back into a reality that did not include hacking nor espionage.
I give this book 4 stars out of 5. Very exciting.
